The Delhi high court on Monday granted bail to four convicts serving life imprisonment in the murder case of TV journalist Soumya Vishwanathan.
A former police officer, Abhay Kurundkar, who received the President's Medal for meritorious service, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of assistant police inspector Ashwini Bidre-Gore in 2016. Kurundkar was in an extramarital relationship with Gore and killed her with the help of others in Bhayander, Thane district. He was convicted of murder and other offenses by a Maharashtra court. Kurundkar's associates were also sentenced for their involvement in the crime.
Nalini Sriharan, one of the convicts who was serving life imprisonment in connection with the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, on Thursday approached the Supreme Court seeking release from prison -- like fellow convict AG Perarivalan.
Besides Mittal, seven others were awarded life sentences in the case by a lower court.
Those convicted for offences like rape, rape and murder, smuggling of narcotic or psychotropic substances and dacoity will not be eligible for "regular" parole, as per the amendments made in the prison's manual by Maharashtra government.

A court in Goa has sentenced a 31-year-old local resident to rigorous life imprisonment for the rape and murder of Irish-British national Danielle McLaughin in 2017. The accused, Vikat Bhagat, was found guilty of raping and murdering the 28-year-old tourist, whose body was found in a forested area in Canacona village of South Goa on March 14, 2017. His mother, Malati Roy, who had previously expressed support for the punishment, shut herself in her home and refused to speak to reporters. Neighbors and family members of Roy have questioned whether he acted alone in the crime, suggesting others may have been involved.
The court also ordered that of the total fine amount imposed on the convicts, Rs 12 lakh will be paid to the victim's family.
